Bill Clinton and North Korea

August 9th 2009 12:15
Recently former President, Bill Clinton made a trip to North Korea. He went as a “Private Citizen” and gained the release of jailed American journalists Laura Ling and Euna Lee. The Obama administration stayed quiet on the issue and let Bill Clinton do his thing.

Now the private citizen thing is not quite true, as most of us would not have access to North Korean leaders. But apparently by not making his an official government mission, enabled it to be successful

Some people have tried to find a way to criticize either President Obama or former President Clinton on this. Well shut the hell up! Bill Clinton got the release of the jailed American journalists, kudos to him. I don’t care that Secretary of State Clinton couldn’t get them released or that President Obama didn’t either. They all worked together and got the job done.

I always was a bit of a Bill Clinton fan and he was the only Democrat I ever voted for in a Presidential Election. He has years of political experience and international contacts. It would serve us well if President Obama made use of this and used Bill Clinton as a trouble shooter of sorts.

So I say well done to Bill Clinton for getting the release of the American journalists jailed in North Korea. So stop looking to mouth off about everything done in this administration and only condemn what you really think is being handled wrongly

Do you think they'll send him to Iran to rescue the hikers?

I'm not complaining that he got the journalists freed, but there's a rumor that Kim Jong (mentally) Ill, arranged for them to be taken so he could get a photo-op with the ex-prez. as a way of legitimizing his regime. It worked.

Do you think it's possible that Ahmadinejad is doing the same thing?

I think the hikers were idiots to be there. At least the North Korean incident involved people doing a job that got them in trouble.

Agreed. Anyone who wanders along such a border shouldn't be surprised when they get caught. It just seems like a bit of a set up, though, don't you think? Borders aren't identified by walls or painted lines, yest the Iranians were right there the minute they crossed over. Crazy people on both sides of the situation isn't going to make it easy...

Well done Mr. Clinton and well written Mr. Inman.

What in the world was in the minds of those hikers in Iran? They should be billed for the costs incurred in obtaining their release should those efforts be required. Our government's time could be spent on many more critical issues.

I am again surprised by your commentary, Randy. I appreciate your willingness to recognize good diplomacy and keep the political side out of it. Good on you!

Randy, as a NON fan of Bill Clinton, I was as happy as you are that this plan was executed so effectively. I really don't trust the Clintons in the least, but I concede their ability to use their clout for diplomacy, and this had a very happy outcome.

The question is this....what's more shocking? You, a conservative thinker who likes Bill Clinton or me...a liberal who can't stand him? Food for thought!

Yah, I think this whole thing was a set up from North Korea to make themselves look like good, decent citizens of the global community. Clinton was a pawn in their game to be sure.

I'm sure those journalists are glad to be free but I don't think their release was ever in doubt- as long as America and Clinton complied.

People don't be shocked when I don't always cover a conservative slant. I am not always a right wing robot, just most of the time.

Bill Clinton kind of reminds me of fictional character (portrayed by George Clooney in the eponymous film) Michael Clayton.

Your past several posts seem to reflect a modification of what, in my opinion, were extreme right wing views. This is the Randy I had admired, willing to take a dispassionate view of facts and not always condemn the Clintons or President Obama.

This comment may put you in “hot water” with some people, but I admire you. Obviously we have different points of view but it looks like we can, as before, discuss issues without name-calling and rancor.
Goof article.

Jim I DO have some extreme right wing views just not on every issue.

I think it's great that the journalists have been released, whether it was a set-up or not. It must have been a horrible ordeal for them, no matter if they were being used as pawns and/or jailed unjustly.
