Looking for a Liberal point of view

June 21st 2009 16:57
I am looking for a liberal point of view on what is happening in Iran with the riots over Acorn, err Iranian election fraud. Please give me your points of view and thoughts on the following. I ask my conservative friends to weigh in on these topics as well. But I would really appreciate a liberal point of view since I do not think that way on most issues.

Should President Obama use stronger language and add sanctions against Iran over what is going on?

Is it ok for the Iranian Government to block internet access and otherwise limit information getting to their people, and stop their free speech?

Is it ok for the Government of any country to run fake elections for “The good of the people?”

Do you believe as I do that President Obama’s early years of Muslim training make him favor hard line Muslims against all opposition they may face?

Are you really pissed off at these questions since they clearly parallel Obama’s love of election fraud and hatred of Free Speech?

Are any of you watching the news coverage of the Iranian riots? Or is it on Fox News covering it? I spit on the other networks and refuse to watch them.

I'm anything but liberal, as you already know, Randy, but I do think our Muslim-in-Chief is going to do nothing to support the rioters and will find subtle ways to defend the Iranian government. It wouldn't surprise me a bit to find out that ACORN members had a hand in the election fraud.

Watching the Iranian drama unfold, we can get a clear view of what to expect if we ever have enough of B.O. (B.S.) and his criminals.

The sad thing about this is it could be America in a couple of years from now. But I don't think the American people will put up with too much more of this none sense.

The charges against the black panthers were dropped by Holder, so the radical left, and ACORN can now do pretty much do what they want to hinder voters, only until voters get fed up with it, and come down hard the commies.

As you can tell I am not liberal either, Obama is a man in conflict, he doesn't want to say anything to offend his Muslim brothers, but he doesn't want to seem to be Muslim either. He may do some double talk if his TelePrompter is working, nothing that either side could take comfort in.

Well Randy ... I think he is doing he right thing, but probably for the wrong reason ... so just a coincidence. My feelings are based on two things:
1. I do not feel freedom, when given as a gift, will endure. Until the people of the Middle East, Aftica or any other oppressed society want their individual freedom and are willing to go to whatever length necessary to get it, it will not mean anything. Someone will come along and take it from them. Right now the people of Iran are engaged in civil disobedience but until they decide they want to move forward from the twelth century governing values ... freedom just ain't gonna happen. We should not be meddling because it is none of our business and we will not follow through. Does anyone really think Iraq and Afganistan are not going to recede to the twelth century as soon as we are out of sight? That is why it is going to take forever for our troops to leave. We are dealing with a part of the world that is governed by twelvth century regilous mentality and education is going to have to preceed freedom. I do not think religion and government mix well. Some of the original settlers of this country came seeking freedom of reliqion as well as freedom from religion.

2. I remember from my childhood, Budapest, Hungary. The free world encouraged bebellion then stood back and watched as the Russian tanks slaughtered the rebelling population.

I agree with Lester that Obama is not taking any action because he does not wish to aggrivate the Muslim world and I also suspect we are going to have to be fighting these same battles here in this country in the not too distant future.

There are a lot of yong people in Iran ... they will figure it out regardless of our opinion and hopefully join the rest of the world, well some of it anyway, in the 21st Century.

I have given thought to those young people and what they will do when they run the country in later years. And I have no thoughts that we can free people who do not really want to be free.

Funny we never free anybody unless they have oil.

Is it ok for the Iranian Government to block internet access and otherwise limit information getting to their people, and stop their free speech?

China does it. In Burma, it costs somewhere between $1000-3000 to get a SIM card for a phone (that's American dollars too), just to prevent the majority of the population from being able to communicate... but I haven't heard anyone saying that America should intervene there.

I'm not saying it's right. I think it's the very worst of repression... but I don't think you can single out Iran for this.

Should President Obama use stronger language and add sanctions against Iran over what is going on?

No. What if the other guy won in an unfair election, and the supporters of Ahmadinejad were rioting? Would there still be suggestion of sanctions and intervention? I suspect not.

Is it ok for the Government of any country to run fake elections for “The good of the people?”

Hypothetically, yes. In reality, no.

Do you believe as I do that President Obama’s early years of Muslim training make him favor hard line Muslims against all opposition they may face?

By early Muslim training, I take it you mean that he went to school in Indonesia, right?

Personally, I find this a little offensive. I went to school in Indonesia for a LOT longer than Obama did. Do you know the details of his 'Muslim training'? He spent 3 of his 4 years in a Catholic school, with only his final year in public school. Investigative reporters from the U.S. did articles on the school, debunking the myth that it was a radical Muslim school. Sure, the majority of students there were Muslim. It's a public school in the largest Muslim nation on the planet. That does not mean he was indoctrinated as a covert Muslim operative, as I'm sure some would like to believe.

I will answer a rephrased question... "do you think Obama's early exposure to Islam makes him favor hard line Muslims against all opposition they may face?"

Having grown up in Indonesia, I feel safe to comment on this topic, and the answer is no. Indonesia is a democracy, and Indonesians support democracy. It is not an Islamic state, and bears little resemblance to places like Iran. Hard-line Muslims do not rule Indonesia, and if anything growing up there would allow Obama to see that democracy and Islam are not mutually exclusive.

Granted, my time in Indonesia was later than Obama's, but I still like to think I have a fairly well informed opinion on this topic.

In fairness, I think it is self defeating if you genuinely are seeking another point of view, or an outside opinion, or an honest dialogue, when you fling insults within the context of the request.

Are you really pissed off at these questions since they clearly parallel Obama’s love of election fraud and hatred of Free Speech?

Are any of you watching the news coverage of the Iranian riots? Or is it on Fox News covering it? I spit on the other networks and refuse to watch them.

And then there is the above mentioned "Obama is a Muslim" bogeyman that has been so supremely exhausted, and I think that Someone addressed it concisely.

I think that President Obama is handling this situation with care and consideration for all parties involved. The last thing that the protesters in Iran need is the assumption that their efforts were instigated or the result of U.S. interference. This would only hinder their efforts and President Obama realizes this. That's not to say that he hasn't been clear as to where the U.S. stands in relation to the Iranian people.

Despite your contending that our President doesn't respect freedom of speech or the plight of the protesters, here are his exact words:

"We call on the Iranian government to stop all violent and unjust actions against its own people. The universal rights to assembly and free speech must be respected, and the United States stands with all who seek to exercise those rights."

ill just answer this one question as i think you started ranting at the end about things that arent even true

Should President Obama use stronger language and add sanctions against Iran over what is going on?

i think the only thing a country should impose trade sanctions over are gross human rights violations such as genocide, apartheid, systematic rape and torture etc

in the case of simply having a political system or process which is different i dont think trade sanctions are warranted

as Someone pointed out, we all still trade with China, so why start picking and choosing other countries you disapprove of, other than to agitate ethnic and religious tensions?

i think Obamas diplomacy is a credit to him, and im so glad the Bush days of "with us or against us" are over

i think American trade sanctions against Cuba have been stupid, and railing against communism and socialism and theocracies and dictatorships is absurd and pointless

you will never change the world with aggression or blackmail, you need to be able to reason with people and help them choose a more progressive system

some people look at the USA as a democratic failure, with your non-mandatory voting and widespread ineligibility, during the Bush years Fox news was like a Government run propaganda broadcaster, did Bush even really win against John Kerry? much of the world thought that election was just as dubious as the current Iranian results

just a few things for all the pots to consider when calling the kettles black

Hey Randy, did you hear that ACORN is changing it's name and moving all over the world. That should make for some nice and fair elections, huh?

Well ACORN got even when they rigged the Obama election.

why would you call for trade sanctions against Iran for rigging election results if you believe your country has done the exact same thing in the last two elections?
