McCain is now a Conservative, and so is Obama?

I thought I had this whole election figured out. Back when the campaigns started, McCain was a middle-of-the-roader. Obama was a far left almost socialist.
Now that they are the official ones running, they are suddenly changing views to get ready for the grand election. Both are equally guilty. Here's a small sampling of what they've changed:
McCain
* Was for a more open immigration policy, now for "protecting our borders", but without offending latinos
* Was against offshore drilling, now for it
* Voted against the tax-cuts, now wants to make them permanent
* Was against using ethenol, now says it is a vital alternative fuel source
Obama
* Was for public financing of his campaign, now taking private donations
* Was for legalizing marajuana, now against it
* Was for the ban on guns in DC, now says the overturning was a good decision
* Was anti-NAFTA, now says he's for exploring options for keeping it
I love how these decisions are called things like "shifting positions." We're dealing with grown men here. You don't "shift positions" on vital issues like these. You pander. Thats all this is. Obama doesn't want to be seen as a radical and McCain is afraid of losing the constituency. By the time the real elections happen, it will seem like they have always held these beliefs. They are just hoping that the 70% of people who didn't turn up at the primary vote weren't watching.
The sad thing is that I truly thought that both of these men (althought I wouldn't vote for either one) had some level of integrity. I would have so much more respect for them if they would stick to who they are. It would show character, which is something more than most politicians have going for them.
Where are their balls?
