Memorial Day
May 22nd 2009 22:53
Memorial Day was just a day to think about service men and women for a few minutes and then go on about my day for many years. My dad, two uncles and one grandfather were veterans but I didn’t give their return to civilian life much thought. They all served before I was born.
Then my dad got cancer and found out that is was probably caused by Agent Orange and his tour in Vietnam. You can read an article about him by another writer here. My dad was one of the lucky ones he came home from war. But then it reached out from his distant past and killed him.
I was lucky though I got to grow up with a dad (he died when I was in my late 20’s) but I really symphonize with those family members of people who lost their lives in combat. Most men and women killed in wars are very young, often not yet 20 years old.
Often they didn’t yet marry or have kids and now never will. They will never drive down a highway knowing their military service kept us all free. I salute everyone who ever served and died and those who served and lived.
Next time you see somebody in uniform don’t ignore them. They stand ready to die for you at any time. Thank them for their service and give them the honor they deserve. It takes a special breed of men and women who will put their lives on the line so we don’t have to.
So this Memorial Day when you are enjoying some family time. Stop a minute and give thanks to those who died so you may live. And then go and enjoy your freedom and your family because that is what our fallen heroes would want you to do. I know that is what my dad would want anyway.

Is Why
Many hear the word veteran but seldom link it to father, son, husband and friend(s).
