Republican power struggle

June 3rd 2009 00:17
The battle to see what the Republican Party will become has heated up in recent weeks. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Colin Powell are among the “Big Tent” Republicans who want to try to appease everyone. Newt Gingrich, Dick Chaney and Rush Limbaugh being on the Conservative side of the party.

Let me point out here I am no longer a Republican though I have considered rejoining the party. I was one for several years until becoming dissatisfied with them and becoming a Libertarian until North Carolina dropped them as a party for a while making me an Independent, which I stuck with.

I can see both sides in the Republican Party power struggle. Being a big tent party would possibly ease some of the hatred of Republicans. And they may even pick up the odd new member here and there. But to me the party being Liberal Lite makes no sense. Why be a little Liberal when you can get the whole deal by being a Democrat.

I think the Republican Party needs to make a stand for conservative issues and not try to work with the Democrats all the time. People need opposing parties not watered down versions of one party.

I am not so much a social conservative as a fiscal one so my own taste would be for the Republicans to be more moderate on social issues. But I think the Big Tent Republicans will win the power struggle because of the backing of the main stream media.

I'm completely conservative, both fiscally and socially. I wouldn't want to be part of a "big tent" RINO party if it compromised it's basic beliefs. The Republicans have let us down, true, but the Democrats have knocked us into the dirt and stomped on us. We have to take a stand for what is right and Constitutional, not what's convenient, Randy. We all have to live with ourselves and I, for one, don't want to compromise everything for a few wimpy votes. If more people understand the message, not watered down, they'll vote Republican. Unless a better party comes along with a chance of winning (minus the compromises).
