Riot Protection Tips

June 22nd 2009 04:51

Here are some tips to use if you get caught up in a riot. I am writing this mostly for the Iranians who are protesting the election fraud in their country. I claim no expertise other than some fire and first aid training years ago and lots of research for various articles I have written online.

If you are planning to go to a protest that could turn violent then first consider not going! But there are some precautions to take if you do go and a riot breaks out. You want some good work type gloves, for picking up tear gas canisters and tossing them. They will also keep you from leaving your fingerprints on things.

You need to be (if possible) a good supply of water preferably cool water to wash wounds and clean tear gas or pepper spray off of people. I also recommend wearing some type of mask and safety glasses if possible to help limit the effects of the gas. If you can get a hold of a real gas mask from military surplus or whatever then all the better for you. If you can get a hard hat such as construction workers wear, I would do that. This may keep a baton from breaking your head open. Spare clothes are a must as your gassed ones will cause much discomfort.

A hard hat or helmet will also come in handy if water cannon are used on you. Because you WILL get knocked down by a water cannon. Being dazed from hitting your head on the ground is not good in a riot. You are likely to get trampled to death or at least injured worse. You always want to try to stay on your feet and help others up who fall in a riot. Maybe assign people before hand to watch for fallen protestors and to try to get them back up.

If police dogs are used try to keep them away from your face and especially your throat. If you are wearing thick clothing this will come in handy in fending off the dog. I have been attacked by a big dog, it is not fun. Give the dog your arm if he has to bite something. You may even carry a towel or extra shirt to try to stick in his mouth to distract him until somebody can help you.

Keep in mind one tactic riot police use with shotguns is trying to ricochet the pellets off pavement into your legs. Thick pants may prevent worse wounds if you are some distance away from the shooter. Of course in Iran I expect they shoot to kill in some cases. I hope these tips help protect somebody who gets caught up in a riot.
