So what kind of conservative am I?

So what am I?

I am trying to decide what kind of conservative I actually am. Some of my friends even dare to call me a Reagan Democrat. Probably because I voted for Bill Clinton once. I am an independent right now but was a Republican most of my life. I also was a Libertarian for a while but my state apparently abolished them for a while, which is how I became an independent.

I only really “got into” politics this year and am interested in what label I would actually have. I tend to call myself a moderate conservative. Here are my stances on various issues. So if I fit any category let me know. And yes I know I set myself up for some good insults but I am curious as to what others would call my politics.

Abortion- Mostly I think each state should have the issue settled on the ballot and the Federal Government stay out of it. But as for what I believe in myself. I think Abortion should be allowed in the case of rape (but would encourage adoption) or in the case of severe birth defects. Also have no problem with Abortion if the mom’s life is threatened. But I consider Abortion as birth control as murder.

Gun Control- I used to be a federally licensed gun dealer and am pro gun. However I would not mind mandatory gun safety training before buying a gun. I also have no problem with a waiting period to buy one. I am for concealed firearms licenses as well.

Death Penalty- I am for it if there is no doubt the person is guilty in premeditated murder. If only circumstantial evidence is presented then life in prison would be my choice.

War in Iraq- I think we should never have went over there. But now that we have I think we should try to stabilize the country before leaving. But I think if the Iraqi government does not make a real effort on their own behalf, then we should bail.

War in Afghanistan- I think it needed to be done and should have more assets to see it is done correctly. THIS war was justified by 9-11.

Energy- I think we need to drill more on our own land meanwhile making a real effort to find a new energy source that would make us independent from Foreign Oil.

Economy- I think lower taxes encourages economic growth. I think companies that send jobs overseas should be taxed heavily however. Companies who provide jobs here should be taxed far less or not at all. If people have jobs the rest of the economy will take care of itself.

I am very against raising taxes on the rich to provide wealth redistribution, this socialistic policy does not work. More taxes means higher prices passed on to the consumer or it means business’s under thus costing us jobs.

I found out today my own job is falling victim to the predicted tax increases of the new President. I will probably keep my job until Christmas then I am toast. And this is a National company not some local place.

Welfare- I am all for welfare and food stamps and the like. But I am also for job training and not just a hand out. If nothing else people on assistance should be out doing community service.

Health Care- I think companies should be encourage to provide it for their workers. They should get tax breaks to help pay for it. I am against socialized health care as I think it would be shoddy and too expensive. The Government screws up everything else and health care is too important to trust them with.

Religion- I am agnostic but with slight Christian leanings. I do not believe in insulting anyone’s religious choices.

So what kind of conservative am I? Thanks in advance for any replies not containing insults.

The Political Brief

Well, Randy, you may find yourself being insulted because I agree with much of your philosophy. Since I'm what they call a "right wing extremist" it could make you look "bad" in the eyes of a few ultra left-wing-nuts. From what you've said you're not a traditional "moderate." Moderates generally have no core values and can sway with the breeze,never being quite sure where they stand and fearing to seem too opinionated. It's a completely gutless position and that isn't you. You have beliefs and values. That also eliminates the possibility of your being a liberal. I'd say you're a conservative but not as radical as you could/should be.

Maybe you're a South Park conservative. They tend to lean libertarian, and you seem to still have a number of libertarian values (some of which are line with mine, believe it or not).

Round Politics

Pretty much my kind of Conservative Randy. I share many of your beliefs, I am a hard line second amendment supporter, but think that a safety class would be a great Idea, back ground checks is great, but depends on how long the waiting period is.

Abortion only to save the mothers life. Religion to each his own as long as government stays out of it, and we have the freedom to practice as we believe.
