If the economy doesn't kill me, my flat screen TV may

I'm suprised there wasn't more buzz around a report by Michael Prather of the University of CA last week.
Apparently, our flat screen LCD and plasma TVs use a potentially hazardous gas 17,000x as potent as that pesky old CO2 that everyone has been making such a big deal out of. The gas remains in the air for over 500 years. The emissions are not controlled in any way by Kyoto because it was written in 1997 before these TV's were in production.
So, if you are one that believes in Global Warming, you better get ready to ditch your flat screen TVs and monitors or be seen as a hypocrite.
As someone who is thoroughly unconvinced either way, my big TV will be remaining on its cozy home in my living room in front of the recliner. I'll be waiting for the day Al Gore shows up on my doorstep to take it away.

Small Thoughts on Big Questions
As for global warming, I don't see any way around the fact that the evidence indicates that it's a reality. The extent of human causation may be debatable, but increased temperature and drastic, unseasonable changes in arctic sea ice, etc. are fairly unambiguous. Whether or not we're causing it, it still seems to be an issue we're going to need to deal with.
Fortunately, that doesn't involve me disposing of my much-loved television

From my understanding, the gas is given off during the PRODUCTION of the Tv's- not in the actual use of them. I haven't been able to find out exactly how that is, but it looks like it applies to LCD and Plasma- do I guess you are sage!
Thanks for pointing out my misspeak- I should have clarified above that "if you are one that believes that we are causing Global Warming" since it does seem to be a fact.
I'm unconvinced that we are causing it at this point. I've read convincing things on the other side as well, so I'm up in the air about who actually knows what they are talking about. I suppose we will find out eventually....
